How To Settle Into a New Home
Ah, spring is coming. A time of renewal, beauty and… moving. With the spring season typically being the busiest one for most of the country, that means there are a lot of people moving into new homes right now.
It can be stressful and intimidating to find yourself in a new place under normal circumstances. But if you find yourself packing up all that is precious to you in an attempt to start fresh somewhere new, whether it’s down the street, across town, or in a whole different state in this quasi-post pandemic world we find ourselves in, never fear. The following tips and tricks will help you settle cozily into your new abode in no time.
Stay Organized When Packing
This may be easier said than done, but if you can implement a ‘packing plan’ then once all of your boxes make it to the new place it will be that much easier to unpack and set everything in its proper place. That means labeling boxes, wrapping breakable items well and setting aside a few bags of personal belongings such as clothes, toiletries, beloved stuff animals or books, that you’ll need immediately upon arriving at your new home.
Clean Before Moving In
This may seem counterintuitive to some – shouldn’t my new house already be clean? – but especially after the health war we’ve been waging this past year, you will feel much better in your new space after you’ve personally seen to its cleanliness. Whether that means busting out the disinfecting wipes yourself, or hiring a professional cleaning service, is up to you. But seeing the scrubbing and wiping down first hand will give you an immediate peace of mind.
Set Up Your Kitchen First
Now, some may recommend setting p your bedroom first, to help you get a good night’s sleep. But everyone knows that the kitchen is the heart of a home, even if all you do its order take out. Having at least some semblance of order in the room where you will be spending the most of your time will help give you a sense of accomplishment and also give you a ‘calm down’ zone where you can take time to relax, knowing it is all ready all set up. It won’t take much time to create a working kitchen – a trip to the grocery store, some biodegradable plates and utensils, and a microwave will allow you to at least do basic meals to stay fueled for the move.
Make Sure Your Windows Have Blinds
This can often be overlooked, especially if having sellers leave window treatments was not negotiated during the buying process. If you move into your new home and find yourselves with lights blazing and no blinds for privacy at night, it can feel invasive. If your new-to-you house does not have any blinds, or is missing some in key areas, make run to the closest home improvement store to grab some. Or you can just hang sheets or towels until you have a chance to decide what kind of blinds you want. You don’t need to worry about drapery or roman shades or anything fancy at this point, just a basic window covering for privacy. You’ll feel more secure and your neighbors will thank you.
Consider all of Your Senses
It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of moving. There’s so much to do and you trying to make things as easy as possible on any family or pets who are moving with you. Sometimes, all you need to crate a nice atmosphere is to consider all elements that say ‘home’ to you. Perhaps it’s a matter of setting up a bluetooth speaker to pay your favorite music while you unpack. Maybe it’s lighting candles or plugging in an air freshener that brings back good feelings and memories from your previous house. Some fresh flowers or sticking children’s artwork on the fridge may give you that visual cue you’ve been missing. Whatever it is that speaks to you, make it a priority in your new place.
There are plenty of practical things you’ll need to consider during a move; things like having locks rekeyed, filling out a change of address form with the post office, setting up or transferring utilities, etc. But these five tasks will work wonders towards helping you and your loved ones really settle in and feel at home.
